Amartya Sen, winner of the 1998 Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences for his research on welfare economics, human development theory and famine, received an honorary degree at a ceremony on April 21. Sen’s research crosses several disciplines but he is best known for his work to understand the causes of famine.

UBC awards honorary degrees to recognize individuals who have made substantial contributions to society at the provincial, national or international levels. At the UBC Vancouver campus, degrees are awarded during the Spring Congregation and Fall Congregation.
