Strengthening UBC Links With China

A UBC delegation recently visited China to strengthen the university’s relations with academic partners, alumni, and government.

Professor Toope attended meetings across China, including one with Professor Heping Hu, Chairman, Tsinghua University, to follow up on the January 2011 launch of a student mobility program shared by both universities. The popular program includes opportunities for graduate and undergraduate students in both course work and research, including undergraduate co-op placements at Tsinghua University.The meeting was an opportunity to build on longstanding collaborations in medicine and physics and discuss the potential for further scientific scholarly collaborations.

UBC and Peking University have a wide range of research and other collaborative agreements, some dating back to 1980. To help consolidate these links, Professor Toope and Professor Shanlu Zhu, Chair of the University Council, Peking University, signed a university-wide student mobility agreement. The two universities continue to explore the potential for other opportunities that can be shared.

The signing ceremony was also attended by Vice President International Yansong Li, Director of the Office of International Relations, Hongwei Xia and Deputy Director Wang Yong.

While in China Professor Toope met with Minister Yuanchao Li of the Bureau of Senior Officials Education, Central Organization Department (COD) to discuss a UBC program developed for Chinese university presidents and the continuation of a UBC leadership program for presidents and vice presidents of state enterprises in China.UBC continues to explore opportunities with its partners in China, with other representatives currently planning to visit throughout March.

The meeting was also attended by Mr. Xingtang Wang, Vice Deputy General, Bureau of Senior Officials Education; Madame Guilan Cheng, Associate Deputy General, Bureau of Senior Officials Education; Mr. Jianhong Shao, Division Director, Bureau of Senior Officials Education; Ms. Qinfang He, Associate Division Director, Bureau of Senior Officials Education; Ms. Helen Pennant Executive Director International; and Dr. Weihong Song, Special Advisor to the President on China.
