Dear colleagues and friends,

I am delighted to be formally installed today as the 13th President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of British Columbia (UBC). I look forward to working with you, our community of students, faculty, staff, and alumni, as well as the many friends of UBC across Canada and around the world.

This is an exciting time at UBC. This year we welcomed the largest-ever incoming class of 8,360 students to our main campuses in Vancouver and the Okanagan. UBC has grown to be widely recognized to be among the top 25 public institutions in the world. Next year, as we celebrate UBC’s 100th anniversary, we will rejoice in UBC’s impact on our local, national and global communities. We will also challenge ourselves as a community to build on our success. Today I outlined the themes I see continuing to define success for UBC.

Thank you for the faith that you put in me as President and Vice-Chancellor. Now is a time for optimism, for excitement at what is to come, and again, for thanks. I know that so many of you will be integral to the success UBC will enjoy in the coming years.

Warm regards,

Professor Arvind Gupta
President and Vice-Chancellor
