UBC’s commitment to the wellbeing of its students is something I’m very proud of and I am so excited that we are about to embark on a new endeavor that supports UBC students’ fitness and wellbeing goals.
Earlier this summer, the UBC Board of Governors approved the Recreation Centre North project – a brand new recreation centre that will add 101,000 sq. ft. of recreation and fitness space to the Point Grey campus. In October, construction will begin on the $67.5 million building, which will provide UBC students with a space to prioritize their physical and mental health. The new facility situates nicely in the heart of the campus, just north of the UBC Life Building and at the western end of Student Union Boulevard.
Students made clear that this is a need when they pledged $22.5 million towards the project in the spring of 2017. Now I’m excited that UBC is bringing to life this vision with a four-story recreation centre that features three gymnasium courts, an indoor run/roll/walk track; universal and gender-specific change areas; and over 41,500 sq. ft. of fitness floor space. This new building is a significant step for UBC towards increasing the overall fitness space available per student.
