To the UBC Vancouver community:

As we continue to watch the situation in Haiti unfold following the massive earthquake, and as the toll on human lives, communities and infrastructure continues to mount, I have been gratified to hear that many in our community are responding to support the international humanitarian response.

A coalition of student groups and UBC’s Global Lounge and Resource Centre have organized a fundraiser for Friday, January 22. All students, faculty and staff are invited to join me at the Freddy Wood Theatre:

Event: UBC Help Heal Haiti Showcase
Date: Friday, January 22, 2:00-4:00 p.m.
Location: Freddy Wood Theatre, 6354 Crescent Blvd.
What: A panel discussion on Haiti, the current situation, and the future

Featuring: UBC professors, representatives from Haiti Solidarity for B.C. and Medecins Sans Frontieres
Donations to: Medecins Sans Frontieres

We have also learned that some of our own community members have lost family members, or are still anxiously waiting to hear news about loved ones. For those on our campus who need personal help, support is near at hand. Students can contact Counseling Services at 604.822.3811, while faculty and staff can contact our employee and family assistance program provider, Human Solutions, at 604.689.1717.

Support will continue to be offered to the people of Haiti in any way we can in the weeks ahead.

Best,

Stephen J. Toope
